IPL 2025 Auction Date to Take Place Outside India; BCCI Set to Declare Retention Policy Soon

IPL 2025 Auction

The much-anticipated IPL 2025 Mega Auction is set for November or December in another country. Although the location is unsure, Saudi Arabia stands the best chance to host the two days event as Dubai did for the 2024 auction.

Decisions about fixing the date of the auction and general rules regarding players’ retention are yet to be made by the BCCI, which should happen in the following days.

One of the primary issues to be addressed before engaging in the auction process is the current player retention rules. As it stands, the rules only allow IPL franchises to retain up to four players before the IPL 2025 Auction takes place. While this rule has been in place for some time, several teams, including Sunrisers Hyderabad, have called for changes. Hyderabad, following a strong 2024 season, is looking to retain more players to maintain a competitive team for the next season. With the three-year player cycle nearing its end, many franchises are eager for more options to secure their talent.

Another issue under consideration is the Impact Player Rule, introduced in earlier seasons. This rule enables a team to bring a player onto the pitch during a match as a substitute, allowing them to counter the opponent’s tactics.

However, it has not been well received by everyone. Some past players, like Zaheer Khan, mentor for Lucknow Super Giants, view the rule as a good opportunity for young Indian players, while others argue it undermines the spirit of cricket and diminishes the value of all-rounders. In July 2024, Jay Shah led the BCCI in meeting with all ten IPL team owners to gather feedback on this rule and discuss potential changes.

As the IPL 2025 Auction Date approaches, decisions regarding retention rules and the auction location will be crucial for teams preparing their strategies for the upcoming season.
